photo of downtown

Located in the heart of the downtown arts district, our historic adobe compound is a surprisingly private and luxurious get-away that still offers on-foot, bicycle, and bus line access to Tucson's best galleries, cafes, The University of Arizona, restaurants, museums, specialty shops, and buzzing nightlife. While lying in the shade of umbrellas by the pool, lulled by the shifting rustle of the towering date palms, our residents feel miles away from the city's hustle and bustle just the other side of our gates. The trains run only a block away and punctuate the sunny air with the sound of long whistles as they pass through the neighborhood. The weekend bells of the old 4th Avenue trolley add their cheerful ring to the myriad of sounds that define downtown when near. Check out http://www.fourthavenue.org to find out more about the neighborhood.

The Writing Suites are one bedroom apartments outfitted with high-speed internet, writing desks, dictionaries and thesauruses, stereos with cd players, cable television, full kitchens, private baths, and comfy beds. All the suites offer the same amenities, but each suite has a different atmosphere from every other. There is nothing modern, stuffy, or generic about Casa Libre's suites. Casa's keepers have taken special care to make sure the suites are livable and homey (if not downright "kitschy"), and fully equipped with the practical comforts of home. There are also a washer and dryer on-site for guests to use.

Guests enjoy privacy and intimacy at Casa Libre. Our outdoor spaces include four shady bird-and-bee-friendly courtyards, pool and spa area, outside tables for writing and visiting with friends (with wi-fi access), and a barbeque area in the back for evening picnics. When residents arrive they are given keys to get into the property as well as into their suites. No visitors are allowed onto the property without our guests' expressed consent. All the suites are located in the center of the property, sandwiched between rear and front courtyards and secured by locked gates all around.

Also unique to Casa Libre is our onsite reference library
which is open to residents during the day. Though the library is non-lending to the public, residents are welcome to take books to their suites during their residency. In the library residents may spread out at the large conference table and browse through our unique collection of dictionaries, thesauruses, style manuals, odd encyclopedias, and other reference books. Residents with laptops may browse the internet while they work, accessing the wi-fi network provided in the library. Two to four nights each week the library is also host to writing groups, readings, and classes and workshops.

The suites are available to independent writers and guests of local non-profit organizations. Casa Libre invites and encourages local non-profit organizations to take advantage of our special non-profit rates for suite rental. We have already made the suites available to organizations such as The University of Arizona Poetry Center, POG, Kore Press, the Tucson Poetry Festival, Chax Press, Center for Creative Photography, and others. To make a reservation call 520-325-9145 or email Casa Libre at casakeepers@casalibre.org. Non-profit literary organizations (and qualifying literary organizations) may reserve the room at low rates between $55 to $65 per night for up to two guests.

See the Suite Rental Page for more information.
