The Casa Libre Self-Directed Residency Program has been temporarily suspended. We anticipate offering residencies again after January 2009. Thank you for your interest.

A Self-Directed Writers' Residency at Casa Libre is a 10 to 24 day (see calendar on application) residency that is awarded to qualified applicants in one of three Open Enrollment periods each calendar year. Self-Directed Residencies at Casa Libre require an application fee but are awarded free of charge (travel/meal stipends not included) to accepted applicants. Residencies are open to local, state, national and international writers with professional or novice backgrounds in writing. Casa Libre encourages writers at all levels of experience to apply.

Casa Libre offers three Open Enrollment periods per calendar year (spring, summer, and fall) for Self-Directed writers' residencies. In each Open Enrollment Period, accepted/qualified applicants are awarded one ten-day residency- defined as either an A session (in first two weeks in a month) or a B session (in the second two weeks in a month)- based on their requested preference for scheduling. Applicants may be awarded up to, and no more than, one A and one B session per year (the two sessions must be consecutive).

Please be advised that a "Self-Directed Residency" is exactly what it sounds like. There are no scheduled activities for our Self-Directed Residents. You are free to do what you will when you will, though Casa's keepers are always happy to fill you in on readings, classes, and other local literary events you are interested in attending. There is plenty going on in Tucson all the time...so don't hesitate to ask.

For detailed information about Self-Directed Residencies, please view the Self-Directed Residency Application (top of this page).

Application Fee: $20, (or $30 for applicants applying for consecutive A & B sessions) which is the only fee required of the applicants.

Eligible Writers: Prose writers of fiction, non-fiction, and prose poetry; poets; scholars & Phd. students working on a scholarly writing project; freelance journalists; and graduate students working on master’s thesis project. Applicants will be awarded residencies primarily based on the legitimacy of writing experience (evidenced by their resume and references) and merit of their proposed writing project. WE ENCOURAGE EMERGING WRITERS TO APPLY!

*Application Deadline: Applications for each open enrollment period are accepted on the following postmark deadlines (please refer to current year's application for actual dates):

  • Spring Open Enrollment, the deadline is September 1 each year.
  • Summer Open Enrollment, the deadline is January 1 of each year.
  • Fall Open Enrollment, the deadline is May 1 of each year
  • *If the postmark date falls on a weekend or holiday, the postmark
    default

Notification: Applicants will be notified within two to six weeks after the deadline date, and receipt of completed application material. Please include a self-addressed stamped postcard for notification of receipt of application if desired.
