Coming in 2007: There will be three ten-day Group Residencies each year, which will be held during the months of April, July, and October/November. During these special residencies Casa Libre will not award any Self-Directed Residencies. These residencies will feature two special guest writing teachers who are established writers of the genre or group represented in the residency, and three to five emerging writers who will apply to attend the residency to work with the guest writers. The teachers and emerging writers will stay in the writing suites and hold daily writing workshops in the library and courtyards at their discretion. The residencies will also include two events—a panel discussion featuring a public conversation between the teachers and emerging writers, and a formal reading featuring the group’s work which will be open to community attendance.
Casa Libre will co-sponsor most of these residencies with local literary organizations, and will host some residencies independently when co-sponsorship is not possible. The themes for the special group residencies will vary from year to year as opportunity and interest dictate. One to two of these annual residencies will be held for specific under-represented groups. All of the residencies will be designed to support emerging and novice writers.
Casa Libre will have a separate application process for these group residencies, and students that are accepted to participate will pay a tuition fee to cover the cost of the classes. Casa Libre hopes to provide need-based tuition scholarships when funding becomes available.
Please email Casa Libre if your local organization would like to create, co-sponsor, or host a unique writers' residency at Casa Libre in the future. We encourage all groups to share their ideas and energy with us.
Please check our web site in September of 2006 for updated information, future residencies, and applications.
