Program Description:

We are pleased to invite you to a book release reading and celebration for Tucson’s own Arianne Zwartjes. Arianne’s first book, The Surfacing of Excess, won the 2009 Blue Linx Poetry Prize from Eastern Washington University Press. She will be reading from this work and books will be available for purchase and signing by the author. Aisha Sloan will be the opening reader for this event.

Aisha Sabatini Sloan is a Los Angeles native. She earned an MA in Cultural Studies and Studio Art from NYU's Gallatin School for Individualized Study, and and MFA in Creative Nonfiction from the University of Arizona. Her writing has appeared in various journals such as identitytheory.com, terrain.org and the Michigan Quarterly Review, and will be featured in upcoming issues of Ninth Letter and Callaloo. She co-founded the blog "Detroit Ho!" and currently teaches writing at The University of Arizona.

Arianne Zwartjes is an EMT and a poet, and teaches in the English Department at the University of Arizona. She is the author of The Surfacing of Excess (winner of the 2009 Blue Lynx Poetry Prize from Eastern Washington University Press) and (Stitched) A Surface Opens: Essays (Diagram/NMP, 2008). Excerpts from her new project, a collection of medically-themed lyric essays, can be found on Terrain.org, The Umbrella Factory, and Back Room Live, and are forthcoming in Ninth Letter.
